Working with silk fabrics

Many times I'll be walking through the fabric store and spot a bolt of fabric and it's "love at first sight"!  So I add it to my shopping cart and walk on, already figuring out what I could make out of the fabulous fabric and the quantity I'd probably need.  After getting home and putting my purchases away so I could work on the project I went shopping for, I forgot about the fabric.  Weeks  later I spotted that fabric and decided to go ahead and make the blouse I'd already worked out in my head.  The fabric happened to be silk, and I didn't remember what it said about being washable or drycleanable.  My friend, who sews a lot with silks, assured me that some silks are washable - and to be sure, take a small square or corner of the fabric and cover it with a damp cotton cloth.  Press the cotton cloth with a hot iron for a few seconds.  If any color shows on the cotton, the garment should be taken to the dry cleaners.  If no color shows, the best way to wash silk is in warm water, by hand, using a mild soap.  And speaking of silk -- if you let your silk garments air dry they will turn yellow.  And, another tip from my "silk sewing" friend: be very careful if using steam on silk - you may end up with water spots on the garment. Now that I've been "educated" a little bit on sewing with silk, I thought the information might help some other sewers.   Have a happy sewing day!
