I'm one of those who have been sewing for years, and have done all types of sewing.  However, just recently I've been doing more sewing with leather -- I've loved the soft sole leather shoes from BabyBootz.com and have gotten into more leather things like the leather diaper changing stations for baby showers, belts and wallets, among other things.

The best thing is how appreciative people are when I give leather shoes as a gift or one of the other leather items.  Even the leather bead necklaces are welcomed and are very easy and quick to make.
